Silver Screenings: A film community for seniors

Cinema should be social

Each month, this free series brings seniors together to connect with fellow film lovers and participate in a variety of events including peer-led film discussions, interactive workshops, and classes. These activities will focus on specific themes to encourage community building around a shared experience, and will provide a safe and supportive environment for creative self-expression. Develop new skills, find your next favourite movie, and meet new people!

If you are a senior, or if you represent a seniors’ group, and you would like to receive email updates about this series, please contact toursandtalks@tiff.net to be added to our mailing list.

Digital Events

Prefer to talk about films rather than tweet about them? Our digital Silver Screenings talks bring seniors together online to watch classic and contemporary movies, and to connect with other film lovers across Canada. The talks focus on specific themes in film. Those interested can sign up below for an online conference call on Zoom, where we will facilitate a discussion on a film that relates to the theme. In advance of the discussion, we will provide you with the film title and information on how you can gain free access to the film at home on digital TIFF Lightbox. Familiarity with computer basics or other technological devices (e.g. tablets) and a WiFi connection will be required. Our next digital event will take place in Spring 2024. More details coming soon.

In-house Events

TIFF Silver Screenings is also able to provide free tickets to films at TIFF Lightbox in our state-of-the-art cinemas, accompanied by on-site activities and complimentary refreshments.

  • Free screening of A Woman of Paris + talk about Charlie Chaplin’s legacy by film curator Alicia Fletcher (April 19, 11am)

Off-site Events

We work with seniors groups to bring film screenings and discussions off-site to various organizations’ community spaces.

Each year we program a few films that are available for off-site screenings. Community groups are then able to select one they would like screened at their facility. Some examples of films we’ve screened in the past are Florence Foster Jenkins, Leave No Trace, and Coming Home (Guīlái).

More information about off-site screenings coming soon.

Resources

Interested in our programme, but not sure if you are able to participate?

We’ve created Facilitator Guides in conjunction with the Volunteer and Learning Departments to provide the tools for individuals to conduct film talks with a film of their choosing. These guides are meant to be used as a resource for engaging critically with film, and provide a space of inclusion and learning. The guide is available for download below.
