TORONTO — This December, TIFF is kicking off the holiday season with a slate of classic Sing Alongs; a special 3D film series; holiday favourites; new restorations and anniversary screenings; and the return of Wavelengths Presents, MDFF Selects, and Midnight Madness Presents (see listings below). Tickets will be available to TIFF Members on Wednesday, November 13 at 10am and to the public on Friday, November 15.

December’s festive programming lineup includes celebratory and participatory singalong events, featuring special screenings of Encanto, The Sound of Music, and The Greatest Showman; the 80th anniversary screening of Vincente Minnelli’s Meet Me in St. Louis, screening as part of TIFF Family Films; Bob Clark’s creepily atmospheric, Toronto-shot thriller Black Christmas on December 18, starring Olivia Hussey and Keir Dullea, screening as part of Next Wave Presents; Billy Wilder’s The Apartment starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine; and on New Year’s Eve, the 25th anniversary screening of Stanley Kubrick’s last film, Eyes Wide Shut, based on Arthur Schnitzler’s novella Traumnovelle.

Artist and filmmaker Blake Williams has curated Dimensional Excursions: A Century of Innovation in 3D Cinema, a programme celebrating 3D’s primal and immersive energy, showcasing films made by artists and filmmakers — from the avant-garde and major studios both — that take playful and innovative approaches to the third dimension. Consisting of features and shorts, the programme includes rare gems like Jean-Luc Godard’s first and only 3D feature, Adieu au langage; Julian Roffman’s 1961 cult classic The Mask, the first feature-length 3D film made in Canada; and Martin Scorsese’s magical 3D feature, Hugo (2011), which, in addition to paying stereo-homage to many other early cinema treasures, includes its own bombastic rendition of the famed Lumières’ actualités.

The Pedro Almodóvar marquee series continues in December and will include a 20th anniversary presentation of the Spanish filmmaker’s Bad Education in 35mm on December 3, screening as part of TIFF Cinematheque’s From the Collection with Cameron Bailey; second screenings of The Flower of My Secret, Dark Habits, and High Heels; and a TIFF Member–exclusive advance screening of The Room Next Door (TIFF ’24) on December 29.

The TIFF Shop Holiday Pop-up (356 King St. W.) returns November 14 to December 29, and will feature stocking stuffers and giftables, alongside TIFF’s first foray into loungewear.

In January, TIFF will unveil its annual Canada’s Top Ten list and will host a showcase February 6–9, plus Industry sessions. More information to follow in the New Year.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMMING LISTINGS

Tickets to Cinematheque series are free to TIFF Members. 3D, 70MM, and Special Presentations are paid – tickets prices and discounts can be found here.
