Digital Dialogues: Alice Wu

Digital Dialogues: Alice Wu on making The Half of It

Writer-director Alice Wu joins us for a candid and casual discussion about the process of developing The Half of It, her long-awaited follow-up to her 2004 indie hit Saving Face. With her sophomore project — a smart, teen-oriented spin on Cyrano de Bergerac — Wu continues to explore, in playful and nuanced ways, the theme of young Chinese American women realizing their sexuality. The Half of It is an endearing, contemporary coming-of-age story in which self-acceptance and friendship prove to be more gratifying than romance.

Jasmin Mozaffari (Firecrackers, TIFF ’19) will moderate this session with Wu, covering topics such as:

  • the challenges and rewards of making a second feature film;
  • finding your distinct voice as a storyteller with diverse characters and queer themes;
  • building creative relationships and the process of working with Netflix.

Alice Wu will be available to answer questions after the event. TIFF Industry brings you Digital Dialogues — discussions with the most exciting creative talent from around the world — on tiff.net/industry, Facebook, and Twitter. This event is supported in part by TIFF’s Share Her Journey campaign.
