What is a Subscription Series?

Subscription Series such as Reel Talk: Contemporary World Cinema provides a global snapshot of the best cinema from around the world, and Secret Movie Club showcases the best of independent cinema, from highly anticipated festival favourites, to small-budget indies, to the year’s most buzzworthy art-house films. The titles are a secret and will only be revealed on the day of the screenings. Films are screened along with a pre-recorded introduction, followed by a live Q&A on Sundays.

How does it work?

Films are added to digital TIFF Bell Lightbox on select Fridays at 12pm EST and are available for a 48-hour period. You have 24 hours from the moment you click play to watch your film before it is removed from your Library. On Sundays at 2pm EST a live Q&A will take place on Zoom with special guests, where you’ll have an opportunity to take part in the conversation.

When and where can I buy tickets?

For Secret Movie Club and Contemporary World Cinema: Past subscribers get access to a pre-sale on TIFF Account Manager beginning October 21 for TIFF Members, and October 28 for the general public. New subscriptions can be purchased beginning November 3 for TIFF Members, and November 11 for the general public. Subscriptions go off-sale November 18 at 5pm for Contemporary World Cinema, and November 25 at 5pm for Secret Movie Club. Single tickets go on-sale exclusively through digital TIFF Bell Lightbox when the first event is available: November 20 for Contemporary World Cinema, and November 27 for Secret Movie Club.

Can I watch from anywhere in the world?

Films featured on our online platform, digital TIFF Bell Lightbox, are geo-blocked to Canada due to agreements with film creators, rights holders, and distributors. This is similar to other online platforms and streaming services. A recording of the live Q&A will be made available to subscribers and single ticket buyers after the event.

How can I watch with a friend?

If you wish to watch films with friends remotely, each person will need their own account and their own subscription or ticket. Please see “When and where can I buy tickets?” above for information about onsale dates.

How many subscriptions/tickets can I buy?

There is a limit of one subscription per series, per account. If you purchased tickets for friends in past years, please reach out to customerrelations@tiff.net for more information on how they can get access.

Do I have to watch the films at a specific time?

Digital screenings are not live events, but are only available for a limited period. Each Reel Talk title will be available to watch starting Friday at 12pm EST. You will have until Sunday at 12pm EST to start the film. Once started, you will have 24 hours to complete the film. Dates for each event can be found on the Contemporary World Cinema and Secret Movie Club pages.

Can I start a film and come back to it later?

Yes. Films can be paused and resumed at any point within the 48-hour window. Once you click play, you have 24 hours to finish watching.

Can I exchange or transfer a ticket to a friend?

Tickets for Subscription Series such as Reel Talk: Contemporary World Cinema and Secret Movie Club cannot be exchanged or transferred. All sales are final and refunds are not permitted.

How do I watch the introductions and live Q&A?

Reel Talk titles will include pre-recorded introductions by the Hosts. They are a part of the film, so no need to look for them.

Live Q&As will be presented by an interactive broadcast through Zoom. You will receive an email invitation on Friday afternoon, with a link to the live event on Sunday at 2pm EST. This is the only way to access the live conversation, and is open for the duration of the Q&A.

You will receive a link via the email your tickets were purchased with on Friday afternoon. If you cannot find your link, please contact customerrelations@tiff.net, and we can resend it to you.

I missed the live Q&A, can I still watch it?

Yes. If you missed the Q&A while it was live, you will be able to watch the recorded version on digital TIFF Bell Lightbox within 48 hours.
