What is Bell Digital Cinema?

Bell Digital Cinema is an online viewing platform that allows users to watch Festival films safely from the comfort of their home.

How does it work?

Start by creating an account or logging in to digital.tiff.net to browse our full catalogue. To watch a film, hover over the thumbnail and click “Rent.” You will be prompted to enter your credit card number in the pop-up window. If you have a promo code, it can be entered in this window as well. You will be emailed a link to watch your rental, or your film will appear in “My Library” shortly. Each film is available for a fixed 24-hour period, and you will have 12 hours from the moment you click play to watch your film before it is removed from your Library.

Where can I view available titles and the schedule?

Before the Festival begins, you can browse titles at tiff.net/films. On August 25, the full schedule for digital events will be available at tiff.net/schedule. Once the Festival begins, you can browse and purchase available titles directly in Bell Digital Cinema. Some titles may not be available until a future date, as noted on the thumbnail.

Can I watch films from anywhere in the world?

At the request of our distributors, only those living in Canada will be able to watch films on the Festival’s online platform, Bell Digital Cinema. However, if you live outside of Canada you can still purchase tickets and watch digital live events, like our In Conversation With… events and the Best of TIFF Reunions.

Why are films geo-blocked to Canada?

Films featured on the Festival’s online platform, Bell Digital Cinema, are geo-blocked to Canada due to agreements with film creators, rights holders, and distributors. This is similar to other online platforms and streaming services. Whether made by independent creators or larger studios, films are intellectual properties that represent investments of time, talent, and money. Film festivals such as TIFF mainly feature works that are in pre-release, representing the first stage before broader release and distribution. As a film moves from pre-release to market, rights holders and distributors will have exclusive territorial rights that may vary from country to country. Those rights will determine when and how a film is released. In addition to copyright and licensing reasons, films are also geo-blocked for security and piracy concerns.

We take pride in bringing films to our local audiences, and other film festivals from around the world are no different. Geo-blocking the public screening to Canada also means that we are acting collaboratively with fellow festivals to ensure they still have the ability to showcase these films locally to their audiences in pre-release.

How can I watch films with a friend?

If you wish to watch films with friends remotely, each person will need their own account and their own ticket. You can purchase tickets for a friend during the pre-sales, as long as you transfer it to them before September 6. Please see “How do I transfer a ticket to a friend?” below.

How many tickets can I buy?

You only need to buy 1 ticket per film, per account. During ticket pre-sales, you can purchase a maximum of 2 tickets per film, one for you and one for a friend. You must transfer the ticket and have your friend accept the transfer before September 6 at 6pm. The film will show up in their Bell Digital Cinema account by September 10. Transfers cannot be processed after September 6 at 6pm.
