40th anniversary screening of new 4K restoration!

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, this tender study of masculinity, myth, and disconnection is Wenders’ most moving and mysterious meditation on the physical and cultural landscape of America. In the deserts of the American Southwest, Travis Henderson (Harry Dean Stanton) collapses in a saloon after weeks (or months) of aimless wandering. Travis’ brother Walt (Dean Stockwell) collects his estranged sibling and brings him to LA, where Walt and his wife (Aurore Clément) have been raising Travis’ eight-year-old son. As Travis begins to piece his life back together, he becomes determined to set back out on the road in search of his long-lost wife (Nastassja Kinski). Beginning with the geographic juxtaposition of its title, Paris, Texas is an intriguing fusion of artistic and cultural heritages, as the Fordian landscapes, Ry Cooder score, and homegrown existentialism of co-screenwriter Sam Shepard are conjoined to the outsider perspectives of Wenders and cinematographer Robby Müller. “For me, this film has come off better than, or differently from, my previous films. Once more, we flew all night without instruments, but this time we landed exactly where we meant to” (Wenders).

Adapted from the original 2016 programme note by Brad Deane

The digital restoration of the film was done in 2024. The original 35mm negative was scanned in 4K at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, with financial support by the CNC. Restoring and colour-correction took place at Basis Berlin Postproduktion, with the support of Chanel and the German Film Heritage Funding Program (FFE).

Introduction by series programmer and TIFF Festival Programming Manager Hanbin Kim.

Merry Christmas Mr. Mo is a poignant and quietly humorous film directed by Lim Dae-hyung. The film delicately explores the themes of life, death, and family bonds through the story of Mr. Mo, a small-town barber. Upon learning that he has terminal cancer, Mr. Mo, portrayed by veteran actor Gi Ju-bong, embarks on fulfilling a lifelong wish: to make a movie with his estranged son, Stephen (David Oh), who is an aspiring filmmaker.

In a snow-covered town, the film unfolds with a mix of melancholy and heartwarming moments. Lim expertly uses minimalistic cinematography and a gentle narrative style to convey the quiet desperation and underlying warmth of Mr. Mo’s character. The film’s black-and-white aesthetic further accentuates its nostalgic and contemplative tone, inviting the audience to the inner world of its protagonist. Merry Christmas Mr. Mo’s subtle humour and deep emotional resonance make it a standout in contemporary Korean cinema, offering a tender meditation on mortality.

20th anniversary screening!

English dubbed.

When Sophie, a teenage girl who works in her father’s hat shop, meets the charismatic wizard Howl, she inadvertently arouses the wrathful jealousy of the evil Witch of the Waste, who casts a spell that turns Sophie’s face and body into that of a 90-year-old woman. Seeking to dispel the curse, Sophie is led to Howl’s castle, a colossal, sentient flying machine, and embarks with the wizard into the crucible of a destructive war that Howl is desperately trying to stop. Adapting and considerably altering Diana Wynne Jones’ fantasy novel, Hayao Miyazaki creates one of his most visually inventive works and introduces a deeply felt pacifist theme, which he stated was inspired by his outrage over the American invasion of Iraq. One of the most financially successful Japanese films of all time, Howl’s Moving Castle received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Almódavar Matters

It’s been more than 44 years since a young filmmaker called Pedro Almodóvar burst on the Spanish film scene with his first irreverent first feature. Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom (1980) rattled outdated social taboos while providing a vigorous new model for filmmaking in Spain, dispensing with continuity and conventional modes of framing but keeping performance and identity at its very core. The body of films Almodóvar has crafted since then — most within the supportive structures of El Deseo, the production company established with his brother Agustín in 1986 — is a remarkable testament to a filmmaker whose curiosity, craftsmanship, and ingenuity has animated and inspired audiences around the globe for more than 40 years.

No one makes films quite like Almodóvar. Embracing the thriller, melodrama, screwball comedy, farce, film noir, sci-fi, and western, Almodóvar has forged a genre all his own — what the Cuban writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante termed “Almodrama”. He has conjured daring narratives blending the comic and the tragic to powerful effect, realized visionary production designs that seem as alive and dynamic as any one of his characters, and created a gallery of wild and wonderful characters that live on in the viewer’s imagination long after the final credits have rolled.

Almodóvar emerged as a filmmaker in the aftermath of dictator Francisco Franco’s death as Spain was making the transition from dictatorship to democracy. Self-taught, his early films reflected the spirit of experimentation, freedom, and defiance that marked la movida madrileña (literally “the Madrid scene”), a counter-cultural movement that attempted to banish the grey years of the Franco regime by looking to the future. Labyrinth of Passion (1982) and Dark Habits (1983) were gloriously brash and witty, celebrating a new permissive culture where anything and everything was possible.

Almodóvar has continued to reinvent himself in each and every one of his subsequent films — films about desire and its discontents, frustrated ambitions, and creative agency. Almodóvar has described cinema as a way of life, and its language, apparatus, and culture feature across all of his work. There are striking references to the medium itself, its materiality and genres, but, in addition, his narratives are often centred on creatives — directors, actors, photographers, and writers — navigating personal and professional crises that shape their artistic work. Films by the filmmakers he admires “accompany him” in his features, from Duel in the Sun (1946) in Matador (1986) to Johnny Guitar (1954) in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), All About Eve (1950) in All About My Mother (1999) to Vertigo (1958) in Broken Embraces (2009). Almodóvar’s is a body of work richly textured with traces of diverse screen influences — from Douglas Sirk and R.W. Fassbinder to Doris Day and telenovelas. This eclecticism is part of what makes him such a unique and original filmmaker.

There are often films within a film, as in Bad Education (2004) and Pain and Glory (2019), films adapted from literary sources as with Julieta (2016, from three short stories in Alice Munro’s 2004 collection Runaway) and Live Flesh (1997, from Ruth Rendell’s 1986 psychological thriller), and plays within films — The Human Voice makes numerous appearances across his trajectory from Law of Desire (1987) to his own rendition of Cocteau’s monologue as his first English-language short film in 2020, starring Tilda Swinton. Theatre, theatricality, and performance (whether on the stage or in life) are constant motifs. Acting is often presented as a mode of survival, with the demands of putting on a play or making a film testing the resolve, stamina, and sanity of his characters.

Indeed, Almodóvar has a deep understanding of acting and actors. He learned his craft by working on the ground with actors, performing in the 1970s with the experimental company Los Goliardos, where he met future frequent collaborator Carmen Maura. Few directors elicit the deft, emotionally rich performances that Almodóvar secures from actors as diverse as Penélope Cruz, Marisa Paredes, and Blanca Portillo. And while there have been male stars, as with Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem, and Javier Cámara, it is the women who usually steal the show. Almodóvar has placed the emotional lives of women centre stage. Taking inspiration from Hollywood’s woman’s pictures of the 1940s and ’50s, he has dramatized domestic conflicts; given form to grief and solace; explored the politics and poetics of motherhood; and sought, in the words of one of his earliest protagonists, Luci, to give women the space “to find their true selves.”

In the process, he has offered world cinema some of its most memorable women characters. From Chus Lampreave’s wickedly funny grandmother in What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984) to Paredes’ romantic novelist in The Flower of My Secret (1995) and Cruz’s luminous photographer in Parallel Mothers (2021), Almodóvar has presented women as creative, intelligent, and resourceful, able to transform their own lives and those of the communities they construct in new configurations of kinship and family.

Key to understanding Almodóvar’s evolution as a filmmaker is an ability to make films that are a product of, and a comment on, the times in which he has lived and worked. For all the global reach of his work, he is a resolutely Spanish filmmaker demonstrating the complex ways in which the personal is always political. Beyond the supposed froth and the banter, the role play and the theatricality, lies a director who presents Spain and its landscapes, cuisine, economic woes, political afflictions, and emotional crises at the very centre of his cinema. Perhaps more than any other living Spanish director, Almodóvar has articulated the contemporary zeitgeist: the euphoria of the early years of democracy in his early films, the brash confidence of socialist Spain in the late 1980s, the dour pessimism during the recession of the early 1990s, the decentralised nation-state celebrated in a series of films beginning with All About My Mother (1999), and issues of enforced disappearance, historical memory, institutional corruption, and fault lines of Spain’s democracy in the films that have followed Volver (2006).

With his newest film and English-language feature debut, The Room Next Door, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Festival and had its North American Premiere at TIFF this September, Almodóvar shows no sign of slowing down. He continues to make films that matter, films that celebrate creativity as an enabling act, a binding mechanism that brings a broken family together or refashions how the past is remembered. The films of Pedro Almodóvar show the potential of art to embody the temper of the times with wit, verve, humour, elegance, and profound humanity.

It is important to note Annemarie Jacir’s accomplishments, but it is not enough.

Her film Like Twenty Impossibles (2003) was the first Arab short film ever to be an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. Her debut feature, Salt of This Sea (2008), also premiered in Cannes. Subsequent features When I Saw You (2012) launched in Toronto and Wajib (2017) at Locarno.

All three of Jacir’s features were selected as Palestine’s entry for Best International Film Oscar. Jacir is now a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). She has lived in Riyadh; Bethlehem; Los Angeles; and New York, where she taught at Columbia University.

Jacir has served on festival juries at Cannes, Berlin, and Sundance, and her work continues to be screened at the world’s leading festivals, in art-house cinemas globally, and on Netflix.

It’s important to note all this because the context surrounding Palestinian cinema has become more charged than ever — and it has always been charged. But it is not enough to note the broad embrace Jacir’s work has received from audiences, critics, and film institutions around the world, because its power and its value are more intimate than geopolitics. And her work is more lasting than any given moment, no matter how horrific that moment — this moment — may be.

“What I am interested in is people,” Jacir once said, “and the small ways they survive, find hope, find humour, and resist disappearing.”

That vast and humble curiosity drives Jacir’s exploration of the Palestinians she brings to screen. Equally at home in fiction, documentary, and experimental forms, she has informed her features and shorts with nuance; sharp insight; humour; and yes, love. Jacir’s films and videos speak in the voice of a poet who loves the people she shares with us, with all the intensity, pain, and transcendence that love brings.

Born in Bethlehem, raised in Saudi Arabia, and educated in the US, Jacir exists both within and without communities. Her work often adopts the perspective of an outsider — a boy observing adult fighters in the historical drama When I Saw You, a Palestinian American seeking to reclaim “home,” in Salt of This Sea — to illuminate what insiders might take as normal. In her most recent feature, Wajib, real-life father and son Mohammad and Saleh Bakri play a father and son driving through Nazareth to deliver wedding invitations. The interplay between the two men’s worldviews as they drive, bicker, and visit wedding guests peels back so many layers of how they navigate both their present reality and complex past.

In From Palestine with Love (Postcard From the Future), one potent shot concentrates the ideas and emotion that power Jacir’s work. The camera slowly pulls back from a blank surface that turns out to be a wall. In fact, it’s the wall — Israel’s Separation Barrier with the West Bank. Suddenly, magically, one concrete panel of the wall falls forward, revealing a sea on the other side.

It’s in the depths of that sea that Jacir’s stories, her images and her meanings, can be found.

We enter films from anywhere. It could be the story that sweeps us up. It could be watching a character who becomes more compelling with each scene. It could be the details ― the way a shot is framed, the way light hits a costume, or the way a music cue drops at just the right moment. Or, it could be all of this, plus the visceral pleasure of watching light dance on the big screen.

For me, that experience hits a new level when we watch a 35mm print of a great film. That’s how I began watching films in the pre-digital era, and that’s what I want to bring to life as often as possible in our cinemas.

TIFF is fortunate enough to be the caretakers of 3,500 35mm film prints, held at a storage facility down the highway from TIFF Bell Lightbox. We began this work in 1990, when we acquired the collection of the Ontario Film Institute. In 2016, as film distributors completed their transition from 35mm prints to digital cinema packages (DCPs), we acquired print collections from Universal Pictures, Mongrel Media, eOne, and others. Our promise then was to protect and preserve film on film.

Partly, it’s practical. Film prints remain the most durable, stable way to preserve what filmmakers create. Under the right conditions, they can last a century.

Partly, it’s curatorial. When a film is shot on 35mm, screening it in the same format preserves the intentions of the artist as closely as possible.

And partly, it’s emotional. Projecting light through the physical strip of film, at 24 still frames every second, offers a richer, warmer experience than even the purest digital copy. It’s like listening to a favourite album on vinyl, or picking up a physical book and savouring the turning of each page, instead of swiping a screen.

Analogue. There’s nothing like it.

But it can’t be just any film print. For this new series, From the Collection, I went through our list of films carefully, almost obsessively. Which films show us something central to film history? Which films are so cinematic that they cry out to be seen on the big screen? Or so rare that they can’t be found on a streaming service? Or so provocative that they’re bound to start conversations, bound to send you home more alive to the possibilities of art in your world? Which films are simply so great that you want to share them with people you care about?

Today, we live in an infinite flood of digital images. From the Collection is our invitation to step in the other direction.

One film each month (except September, when we always have something special for you).

Chosen with care from our 35mm collection.

Presented by some of the best cinema technicians in the world. In Canada’s best cinema.

With conversation afterwards in Varda, our newly renovated third-floor lounge bar.

Join us on the first Tuesday of each month for a truly unique film experience.
