Using its 3-D imagery to bold advantage, Pina masterfully captures the essence of Pina Bausch's work and sets a new benchmark for the depiction of dance on film.

Notes

Wim Wenders nearly abandoned his film on Pina Bausch when the renowned choreographer died just days after being diagnosed with cancer. But when Bausch's dance troupe decided to carry on with the project, Wenders reconceived it to create this magnificent 3-D tribute to an artistic genius. Employing streets, parks, rooftops and other unconventional locations as exciting backdrops, Wenders captures the sheer joy, abandon and remarkable physicality of Bausch's choreography as her dancers perform her innovative routines, from a remarkable rendition of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring during which the dancers leave traces of their movements in the earth to the "Vollmond" number for which set designer Peter Pabst provides an onstage waterfall through which the performers move. Using its 3-D imagery to bold advantage, Pina masterfully captures the essence of Bausch's work and sets a new benchmark for the depiction of dance on film.
