2016 has been a tremendous year for TIFF.
From the fourth successful Next Wave Film Festival in February, an extended TIFF Kids International Film Festival and record-breaking digiPlaySpace throughout March and April, the future-facing technology featured in our summer POP VR exhibitions, and another incredible Toronto International Film Festival in September, we have accomplished so much over the past 12 months.
And without the amazing support of our Members, donors, supporters and partners, none of this would have been possible.
See below for a more in-depth look at TIFF's impact in 2016.
Film has the power to transport, enlighten, and inspire young minds. Through our community outreach programmes such as Special Delivery and Pocket Fund, TIFF brings the power of film to life for children and youth from all backgrounds. With the help of supporters like you, we deliver programming that builds confidence, creativity, and a sense of wonder in young film lovers and the filmmakers of tomorrow.
"[With] a citizen driven support network created to support the influx of Syrian refugees in 2016, we welcomed Project Welcome's Children's Program Coordinator and a group of 40 kids to digiPlayspace in April, courtesy of the Pocket Fund. At the time, all children attending were staying at the Super 8 Hotel on Spadina and not yet formally enrolled in school, so the opportunity to visit a nearby attraction on a midday afternoon was a perfect fit."
There was a bounty of treasures at TIFF Bell Lightbox in 2016 for film students, scholars, and cinephiles. TIFF's mission to transform the way people see the world, through film, was found in our extraordinary array of educational events, including Master Classes with Guillermo del Toro; onstage conversations with directors Richard Linklater and Catherine Hardwicke, author Margaret Atwood, and astronaut Mae Jemison; programming for post-secondary students on the art of Foley sound and film projection; and post-screening conversations with Mya Taylor and Jay Baruchel.
Founded in 2007, Reel Comfort brings film-based workshops, screenings, and guest visits to mental health units across the Greater Toronto Area. Through the support of individuals and foundations, the outreach program has made a significant impact by working with otherwise isolated individuals to connect with their own creativity.
"[We want to give participants the opportunity to talk about something other than mental health [...] we're looking to engage the person, not the patient."
This year, TIFF announced the acquisition of over 1,300 incredible film prints from NBC Universal, Mongrel Media, and Entertainment One. Consisting of classic and contemporary titles, the prints are currently being reviewed and archived by our team of dedicated specialists. This fantastic undertaking was supported by generous gifts to the Save this Moment fundraising campaign.
By adding an incredible wealth of films to our already substantial collection, TIFF is preserving the history of cinema for generations to come.
2016 saw attendance grow for Film Circuit, TIFF's programme that brings film to communities across Canada. With help from generous supporters like you, we continue to champion filmmakers by bringing the best in cinema to film lovers across the country, from Grand Falls, Newfoundland all the way to Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
At the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, we danced in the streets with Pharrell, brought Lagos, Nigeria to Toronto through the generosity of our donors via the Share this Journey campaign, and continued to celebrate the very best in Canadian and international cinema. Over the course of 10 days, minds were expanded, careers were developed, and horizons were broadened. We look forward to bringing another incredible Festival to our fantastic audiences in 2017!
Your donations to TIFF impact what we do in so many ways. We are incredibly grateful for your ongoing support and we are inspired to produce an even more impressive 2017!
Thank you for your generosity and for helping TIFF transform the way people see the world, through film.
