Joshua Rothkopf is a film critic at Time Out New York, where he has worked since 2004. His film writing has appeared in publications including Details,
The Village Voice, Penthouse, The Chicago Reader and In These Times, where he was chief film critic from 1999 to 2003.
He contributes to our survey of taste makers with the following doc picks:
The Real Shaolin (pictured above right)Any documentary about Westerners "colliding with harshreality" is probably a good thing at this point. And I love the idea of Wu-Tang-obsessed buffoons submitting to real Shaolin martial-arts training and getting their asses handed to them. At least I hope that's what this
movie's about.
Paris, Not France Every critic secretly wants to see this one, and not some
boring doc about Jenin or whatever. Secretly, each critic is thinking Me! I will be the one to finally grasp the dark heart of heirhead obsession.Outwardly, we'll scoff at the silliness of it all?but still want to go buy shoes afterward.
Dungeon Masters This latest bit of geekumentary (King of Kong, Darkon, etc.)concerns three players of D&D. We follow their hopes, their dreams, their
hit points and dexterity levels. And to think we used to make documentaries about Kennedys and wars and stuff.
