parallel.jpgThe third in our series of industry voices is Liz Ogilvie, Head of Programming for Docurama Films. After releasing over 200 documentaries on DVD, Docurama Films expanded its reach to the theatrical market with Air Guitar Nation in early 2007. Pictured is Docurama's DVD from Parallel Lines, the previous film from director Nina Davenport who appears this year in Real to Reel with Operation Filmmaker. Take it away, Liz...

Q: What changes do you see in the documentary marketplace?

OGILVIE: With more and more docs being made and the marketplace getting tougher, boutique & self distribution models using digital theaters & limited strategic release schedules targeting niche audiences will become far more  prevalent due to the traditional theatrical release being ridiculously cost prohibitive. Also, the murky waters of digital rights is now a never ending area of confusion and another piece of the pie that filmmakers now  have to pay attention to as well as distributors - where do these rights live and how can they be maximized? With new technology exploding and the  digital world ramping up that's the area that's going to change dramatically & quickly.

Q: What advice can you give doc makers on navigating distribution?

OGILVIE: Find your doc community and get in touch with your peers - it's the best place to find out what other filmmakers are up too. Speak to veteran doc  filmmakers who have been through the maze of distribution and get tips and  advice - but avoid stalking. Pay attention to what films are being released by all the doc friendly distributors e.g. Shadow Distribution and pay attention to how they release a doc. Do your homework research  distributors and what they acquire they may not be the right fit. Absolutely pay attention to what's happening on the web - read doc blogs and get connected to hot button issues, panels and other forums in doc cyberspace and where you can keep up-to-date.

Q: What do you hope to get out of Real to Reel this year?

OGILVIE: I predict Mr. Powers has many treats in store again this year! I want to see innovative filmmaking with a fresh approach - filmmakers who are prepared to take some risk and do something bold and different yet hugely entertaining.

Tomorrow morning, the Industry Survey checks in with Ira Deutchman of Emerging Pictures.
