Over at the Canadian Film Programmes Blog, my fellow TIFF programmer Jesse Wente has posted an interview with director Ernie Barbarash about his film THEY WAIT, selected in the Canada First programme. There seems to be some back and forth about whether or not THEY WAIT is a bonafide "horror film", but I can attest to some jumps from the ghosts that inhabit the story when I got a chance to watch it. Plus, being a keen fan of classic Hong Kong kung fu films, I was delighted to see actress Cheng Pei-pei in the film's cast. Popular from her days as a star at the Shaw Brothers Studio, Cheng Pei-pei starred in director King Hu's classic 1966 film COME DRINK WITH ME and was more recently seen as the evil Jade Fox in Ang Lee's CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. THEY WAIT also stars another genre name, Michael Biehn from TERMINATOR and also as Sheriff Hague in the PLANET TERROR part of GRINDHOUSE. Make sure to get some spooks and shocks Canuck-style and check out THEY WAIT.
Meanwhile here is a trailer for COME DRINK WITH ME to check out Cheng Pei-pei from 1966:
