Remembering Garrett Scott

pict_2002_scott.gifIt was six months ago today, on March 2, that filmmaker Garrett Scott died of a heart attack at age 37. Two days later he and his directing partner Ian Olds won an Independent Spirit Award for their gripping documentary about US soldiers in Falluja Occupation: Dreamland. In 2002, Garrett came to TIFF with his first doc Cul de Sac: A Suburban War Story about a man who stole a tank off a military base in Southern California and drove it through the suburbs.

There were many memorials to Garrett in the spring. But as the Festival approaches, I find myself feeling his absence all over again. I remember phoning him last winter to convey the news that I had joined the TIFF staff. He blurted out a string of obscenities in celebration. His filmmaking associates have started a fund to support other filmmakers in his honor. Further announcements about its mission will be released later this year. Miss you, dude.
